I remember years ago a Brother correcting me for jesting and sarcasm I received the correction, but with much bitterness I truly believed that I was not hurting anyone. I was convicted while reading through this and what Peter mentioned that the “fun” is lost because in hurting those I love I am hurting myself while causing heartache to the very husband and children that I have vowed to love and cherish. I am making a new commitment to work on this area in my spiritual life.

Thank you for a great discussion.

I was searching on the web for a more useful (or literal) translation of “idle words” used in the famous passage you also covered. I believe these other points are well made and that we should devote our conversation to the Lord as broadly as possible.

For one, it’s so easy to hurt people with careless and self serving comments.

When friends and loved ones recoil at my unthinking responses to them, their pain is like a an arrow coming back at me. And second, our words are the greatest witness we have, which is true regardless of the topic of conversation.

As Peter tells us we need to be reminded of the things we know and it was good for me to remind myself of what the Word of God has to say about our words by reading this article again.

2Pe 1:12-13 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

This is the best and most detailed explanation I have seen to date. As such it is also very confrontational to those who, like myself, have allowed this error/sin in our lives. The Word also teaches to let our yea be yea and our nay nay. Great stuff! Thank you!
